Instagram is bringing out the photographer in all of us. For those who are new to Instagram here is a quick intro: Instagram is an app that makes your boring images fabuloutastic! (yes I made that word up). Basically what it does is add an filter to your image that creates different effects.
Instagram is also a social network so you can then share your images with friends and the rest of the world if you like to. Other “instagramers” can comment and like your photos. You can follow friends (or strangers) if you like their images and then they will be shown in your feed.
If you are a blogger you may want to share your Instagram photos on your blog and get more people to follow you. So how do you add your Instagram photos to WordPress? As I tried to do this myself not so long ago I thought I’d share with you how it’s done.
How to add Instagram photos to WordPress
There is a plugin for everything and of course there is a plugin for Instagram as well. So the first thing I did was check out the plugins available and there are several to use. You can just do a simple search for Instagram in the plugins directory. I checked out a few options but in the end this is what I decided to go with:
Plugin: Instapress – “Display your Instagram photos in a sidebar widget, post or pages or inlcude a single Instagram photo via the Instagram URL in one of your posts. Furthermore create your own Instagram gallery with Instapress’ paging functionality. It makes use of jQuery’s fancybox plugin to display a nice slideshow for your images.”
Once you have installed the plugin and activated it this you will se a small icon in the toolsbar when you write a new post.
You will then be able to add the link to the instagram image you want to use. But that requires you know the url right?
How to find your Instagram url
To find your instagram url (link) you first need to go to your instagram app and the image you want the url for and click the “…” and share – email image. You will receive an email with the image and the url to the image. It will look similar to this http://instagram.com/p/N0yfGIQB2T/ Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be another way to do it right now.
Once you know the url you enter it into the instapress box and vola your image will appear. Once you see the image inside the post click the image to align it with the normal WordPress settings. The rabbits to the right is an example of how I did that.
Of course you can also just upload your image like you would with any blog post.
Adding Instagram photos to the sidebar:
You can also add your images to the sidebar with Instapress. The only thing you need to add is this to a text widget: [showshortcode][instapress userid=”” piccount=”” size=””][/showshortcode]
So mine would be:
[showshortcode][instapress userid=”lindahdasilva” piccount=”6″ size=”75″][/showshortcode] and the outcome is: [instapress userid=”lindahdasilva” piccount=”6″ size=”75″]
You decide how many images you want to show and how large they should be.
But, I didn’t do that, instead I used a nice thing called Snapwidget. Why? Because I like the layout better, instead of going all in a row they are sidebyside two and two.
When you go to snapwidget you will see it is really easy to add your instagram images. The only thing you do is add your username, if you want to use a hashtag # and select the way you want the images to be set up. You can even preview it to make sure you like it before installing. When you are done you click “get code” and simply copy the code into a text widget in WordPress. Easy as 1-2-3!
[Hashtags: Adding a hastag : # to your images is like tagging and will make your image come up within a certain category. This way others can find your images and like them and eventually follow you should they want to. However the flow of the tags change quickly as new images are added every minute so you are most likely to get likes just after you have added the tag. To add a # simply add a comment after you have posted your image on Instagram. you can then click the # to see other images in with the same tag]
Now when you click the images you will see that they go to snapwidgets.com instead of instagram. Your image will be show in a larger version. You can also see all your images in your snapwidget profile.
Instagram on your Computer
There’s an array of options if you want to see what is hot on Instagram while on the computer. Over at Instagramers you will find lots of options – just pick and choose your favorite. My choice so far is Statigr.am which will give you Instagram statistic such as how many followers, likes, most popular etc. As of right now my stats looks like this:
Inside of statigram you can obviously see the stats of your images but you can also follow, comment and like just like you would on your phone. It’s really a fun way to browse through images and find new instagramers you may like. All users have the option to add a statigram public profile, this is to allow those who are not on Instagram to see your images and be able to comment on them using Facebook. You can also add follow links like the one I have in the sidebar. (the below one is custom made) There are many fun things you can do with Instagram so if you aren’t yet there go have a look!
