To help your website or blog get to the top of the search engine faster make sure you get listed in all the directories that you can. There are free and paid directories. There are directories that are simply search engines and there are professional directories, both will help you move up in page ranking as well as help you get known in your niche.
First start with the typical search engines such as:
- Yahoo.com — Go to Yahoo.com, click on the directory categories until you find your category that you want to be listed. Once you’ve found the right directory you should see something that says “suggest a site”. If your site is personal in nature, go ahead and suggest it. If it is business you are going to need to pay the fees if any associated with being listed or choose the standard without the fee.
- Bing.com — As always make sure you are not listed first, if it’s not listed then find the “add a site” area and simply follow the instructions, if you’re not sure what to do you can also get your webmaster to explain it or do it for you.
- Google.com — It’s free to get listed in Google, and often it will get searched and ranked without you submitting it but you can still make sure you use all the Google Webmaster extras that are offered. Do a search on Google Webmaster Tools.
- DMOZ.org — Check at the home page of dmoz.org to see if you’re listed yet, if you’re not, and your site is appropriate according to the terms of the DMOZ, then follow the instructions exactly.
These search engines are completely free to become listed in. Even though these sites will eventually search your site, and list you, it is best if you enter yourself to get searched and ranked faster. Then move on to other types of search engines and directories that are dependent upon your particular business or niche.
If you’re a doctor, there are professional organizations that are only for your particular specialty. This is true if you’re an architect, secretary, or other type of business. Find the directories and originations that are within your area of expertise and you’ll be easily found by those who are searching for you.
In each directory there will be a free listing, and sometimes a paid listing. Choose the free ones first, but if the directory is extra exclusive and it is a onetime fee to be included go ahead and fill it out. Do a search on your niche and “directory” and you’ll find a lot of them. Then check to see what the site ranking is on the directory. If the ranking is less than 3 there is no point using them until they are rated 3 or above.
It is very simple to get listed, in each one, you simply fill out the information that they ask for. Be honest, and complete in your listing. If a picture is required, include your professional headshot or a headshot that is as professional looking as possible. Some will even let you include your logo, or a 125×125 button. Do use what is offered to make sure that you put your best foot forward in the directories.
Getting listed is only the beginning. Make sure now that you’re listed you keep your website updated regularly with unique, useful and entertaining content that is written with your target audience in mind.
