Welcome to the second part of Business Web Basics. Today we will be talking about the best ways to buy a good domain name for your new site or business.
One of the first thing you will do when creating your web presence is to buy a domain name, and believe it or not this is one of your most important investments so make sure you think about it before you make a purchase.
Dashes — When you buy a domain name it is best not to get one with dashes in it. The reason is that dashes will not be remembered by the person looking for your website and also because search engines see a dash as a space. However, there is one exception. If the dash helps a search engine realize what the word is better, then use it but makes sure that you use hyphens and not underscores.
Choose .com — Unless your business is really a nonprofit, or organization it is best to choose a .com, and even when it is an organization you still want to choose .com as well as the .org ending. The main reason is that people tend to look for the dot com over the dot org because that’s just what we remember.
Keywords — The best domain name will be a keyword that would be used if someone was trying to find you. If you’re a Dentist in a specific town or county, then use that term if you can because that is what people will look for when they are trying to find you, before they know your name.
Short is best — The shorter you can make your domain name the better. While your domain name can be as long as 67 characters the best is to use something memorable and short if you can. Try to keep it about 20 to 25 characters long if possible.
Avoid special characters — Aside from hyphens, you can use numbers in your domain name but unless a number really is in your business or the item you’re trying to sell with the domain name, try to stay away from that. It’s hard for someone to remember for the customer.
Made up words — While some very famous examples of businesses and websites exist with made up words as names it took a lot of advertising to make it work so try to stick to real words instead of made up words.
Double check it — Before buying look at it clearly to make sure the combination of words doesn’t spell out anything offensive. You might be surprised to find that your domain name spells something unfortunate, so double check!
